vierter stock galerie berlin is pleased to present the group exhibition “EXISTENZEN”, curated in cooperation with Jakob Roepke.
EXISTENZEN is the first group exhibition this year and also the last exhibition for 2011. The exhibition is being curated in cooperation with Jakob Roepke and shows a selection of works that explore the topic of “existence” in an artistic way.
Works by artists represented by vierter stock, Maru Ituarte, Barbora Kysilkova and Jan Thomas, will be shown for the first time in a group exhibition that also features artists living in Berlin: Kim Dotty Hachmann, Jakob Roepke, Stefan Rueff and EMC Collard from London.
The works of Kim Dotty Hachmann (1974, Hamburg) explore the daily existence of the artist, who seeks to find a balance between her obligations as a mother and life partner and developing her artistic career. She uses the medium of video and a format similar to documentation to bring the viewer closer to a fictitious reality. Through its humour and supposed banality, the work of Kim Dotty Hachmann distinguishes itself as an elegant and intelligent query. “KünstlerinMutter” (2010) and the “Bau” series (2005-2006) will be shown in EXISTENZEN. EMC Collard (1981, Frankfurt/Main) will display a selection of mysterious word combinations that she’s found written by chance in various places and then developed. She transforms them into mantras by connecting them with various objects, thereby creating relationships between them. Despite their classical format as drawings, the works are part of a conceptual series that describe the daily existence of the artist as a person in society. Maru Ituarte (1977, Monterrey, Mexico) will be represented by the video work “Mexican Goulash” from 2003. The work developed as a montage of different video cassettes and offers insights into the life of a middle class Mexican family. A shocking naturalness flows out of the paintings on marble by painter Barbora Kysilkova (1983, Prague, Czech Republic), an experimental artist who recombines classic materials such as oil and marble in an innovative way. Classical representational forms such as collage will also be on display in the works of Jakob Roepke (1960, Kassel) and Stefan Rueff (1960, Marburg/Lahn). Both artists share a similar approach to the medium. They use reproduced motifs, which are combined and rearranged in endless variations. Roepke combines these on a uniformly-sized cardboard surface; while Rueff uses the consistency of different paper formats, allowing the printed motifs to meld together through their targeted compositions. The sculptor Jan Thomas (1970, Salzgitter-Lebenstedt) is well-known for his totem-like, archaic sculptures. EXISTENZEN will show works that Jan Thomas last exhibited in Munich’s Haus der Kunst.
As a whole, the exhibition EXISTENZEN will show a selection of works from various artistic disciplines, ranging from painting to drawing to sculpture and video. The exhibition has a strongly figurative approach, and positions itself as an advocate of this style. The artists will all be present at the opening.
